After a quick steering input the body continues to oscillate before the yaw rate settles. The oscillation is small but it is felt by the driver and it contaminates the data used for tuning the control strategy.
Programme constraint
Damper hardware is fixed. Only spring rate, an anti-roll bar setting and a damper valving option can be changed.
Instrumentation
Method
Step response of yaw rate for two damping settings. Switch the trace set and compare overshoot and settling.

Overshoot: baseline 30.9 % · revised 8.4 %. Settling (2 %): 1.83 s → 1.00 s.
FIG 2Settling time against damping ratio
Damping ratio ζ 0.60 — · Settling time 0.99 s
Past ζ ≈ 0.7 the response is slower again. Natural frequency fixed at 6 rad/s.
| Parameter | Baseline | Revised | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural frequency ωn | 6 | 6 | rad/s |
| Damping ratio ζ | 0.35 | 0.62 | — |
| Overshoot | higher | lower | rank |
| Rise time | shorter | longer | rank |
